Dominoes

As part of our maths programme we have been looking at different ways to use dominoes.

As well as playing the joining on game of dominoes we have been counting the dots on each side (addition and subtraction) and creating rows of dominoes to topple.
Here is a clip we watched that shows the possibilities...

Independent reading....

A few of our parents have been asking what to focus on at home once their child has reached the Gold reading level.  Here are a few guidelines which may help:

- A Gold reader should be able to choose their own books for reading enjoyment.  At this level it is ok to be working on an easy chapter book or something from their own book collection that is not too much of a struggle.  Home reading should be an enjoyable experience.

- Reading "in your head" is ok too... for some children this is a skill that needs to be mastered; at this level just asking your child to read aloud occasionally is ok.  Asking your child to retell the story or make a prediction about what comes next will give you clues as to whether they are reading with understanding.

- It is ok to skip the odd word occasionally.  Independent readers do this, as long as it has no impact on understanding.  Talking about new vocabulary is helpful though... young readers need to be building up their bank of vocabulary.

If you have any further questions, please get in touch.

GoNoodle

You may hear your student talk about GoNoodle –a fun website we use to move throughout our school day.
Kids wiggle. GoNoodle gets the wiggles out, so we can keep on learning. GoNoodle gives us over 100 physical activity videos and games – including dancing, running, jumping, stretching, deep breathing, and more - and helps students channel their abundant energy. After we take a quick break with GoNoodle, we’re better able to focus on learning.
GoNoodle is great when:
• we’re transitioning from one subject to another • we’re feeling stressed or anxious
• we can’t sit still
• we’ve had a great day and need a reward

GoNoodle can help energetic kids get their wiggles out anytime, and its free for parents, too. In fact, I’d love for you to use GoNoodle at home and have fun with it as a family, because I believe active, healthy kids make better students.

Wow workers

As a pod the teachers have noticed how far our students have come this year in terms of developing their independence.  Our WOW lanyards have been awarded for children who are demonstrating this in their work.

This morning is going to be a bit wet and miserable - luckily our Aroha kids know what to do inside when it is wet!!

Spring has arrived

We have been busy looking for signs of spring.  Have a look at the daffodil photos taken by some of our kids as well as 'Wow' writing by Ethan.

Signs of Spring
By Ethan

I can see white fluffy baby lambs sitting in the paddock.
I can hear beautiful red rabbits hopping in the rabbit house.
I can smell blossoms that just sprouted in the green grass.
I can feel beautiful green leaves on the trees.
I love hearing the birds singing in the blue spring sky.
